Spanning from the 1990s to present-day, Omega Engineers (Omega) fully recognizes the mutual benefits derived from its long-term professional relationship with Houston Airports.
As a subconsultant to an international design firm in the 1990s, Omega performed construction inspection, construction administration, and document control for the expansion and renovation of Terminals C, D, and E at Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Omega has provided professional services at each of the three entities within Houston Airports.
Today, as a hire under the Airport’s IAH Terminal Redevelopment Program, Omega provides project management support for Infrastructure, primarily at William P. Hobby Airport (Hobby). Robert Lengefeld, who has 39 years of professional service, serves as Project Manager.
Lengefeld supports several of the Southwest Airlines’ enabling projects surrounding their new hangar. He works underneath the guidance of Hassan Sulehri, Assistant Director, Infrastructure Controls. He said he also works closely with Guillermo Cabrera, Interim Assistant Director, Asset Engineering.
“In addition to the Southwest projects, I’m working on restroom renovations,” Lengefeld said. ”That project will be ongoing – we are renovating four restrooms each year and we have a total of 18 to finish. Also, inside the terminal at Hobby, there is a parking office project for the office group and I’m providing management for that as well.”
Houston-based Omega was founded in 1984. Edelmiro Castillo and Santiago Castaneda are the principals of the Disadvantaged/Minority Business Enterprise (D/MBE) firm, which specializes in public infrastructure engineering. With the 35th anniversary of their firm fast-approaching in 2019, they recently reflected on more than two decades of services to the Airport, and are very pleased to still be a factor in HAS’ sustained drive to modernize, improve, and make itself more attractive to its customers.
“Within the Houston Airport System,” Castillo said, “we have provided a great variety of services - planning management, project controls, contract administration, commissioning management, MWBE contract compliance, and capital project master plan implementation support.”
“Omega provided design and construction services for HAS Runway 8L-26R, HAS Runway 33L-15R, and HAS Rehabilitation of 9-27, to name a few more,” Casteneda said. Since, their work has included Program and Construction Management Services as well as the design of multiple runways, a mail sort facility, a new dog kennel, and the Administration building at IAH.
Omega also provides services for private and agency site development and construction.
The principals agreed that they consider their firm’s contributions to HAS among their most notable achievements.
They said their roots are firmly established in this great City and they are also proud of their professional efforts for entities like the Houston Independent School District, Houston METRO, and various Texas Department of Transportation Districts throughout the State, including Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Laredo, Corpus Christi, Dallas, and others.
