Houston Airports partnered with The Boeing Company and Westfield High School to participate in the Genes in Space program on May 10th. Houston Airports Chief Community Relations Officer Rhonda Arnold and Dayni Alba with Boeing collaborated with area schools including Spring ISD's Westfield High School during the event.
Boeing hosted a televised downlink with NASA astronauts Drew Feustel and Scott Tingle at Space Center Houston, NASA Johnson Space Center’s official visitor center, in Texas. The program featured the Genes in Space STEM competition.
Genes in Space asked students to submit research proposals that examine how DNA molecules change in orbit aboard the Space Station. Forty students from Westfield High School participated in this educational experience at Space Center Houston.
Founded by Boeing and miniPCR, the Genes in Space competition offers students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to develop DNA-based experiments that could be performed in space by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. A panel of scientists will evaluate the proposals to select the finalists and, ultimately, a winner.
