Houston provides more nonstop air service to Mexico than any other U.S. city. A strong component of that connection began 50 years ago on Dec. 15, 1966 when the first flight operated by Trans Texas Airways began service to Monterrey, Mexico via a Convair 600 from William P. Hobby Airport (HOU).
“Houston Airports happily celebrates with United Airlines on their 50 years of continuous commercial service connecting Houston and Mexico as our markets continue to enjoy deep cultural and business ties,” said Saba Abashawl, Houston Airports Chief External Affairs Officer. “We are proud that our airline partners provide such a robust route map to destinations throughout Mexico.”
Houston Airports works in close collaboration with United Airlines and the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau to attract more passengers as well as promote existing routes and the Houston area.
International passenger totals at Houston Airports (IAH and HOU) reached more than 10.7 million in 2015 — a record high— and fueling that growth is service to Latin America including destinations in Mexico. About 3.3 million passengers traveled between Houston and Mexico last year, an increase of nearly 11 percent over the previous year.
Texas International Airlines Inc. was a United States airline, known from 1944 until 1947 as Aviation Enterprises, until 1969 as Trans-Texas Airways, and as Texas International Airlines until 1982 when it merged with Continental Airlines. Continental Airlines completed its merger with United Airlines in March 2012.
Houston Airports currently has seven airlines with nonstop service to 24 destinations in Mexico.
