The Houston Aviation Club celebrated its sixth year as the only club associated with two 4-star rated airports in the Western Hemisphere, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). This year the club partnered with Ross Shaw Sterling High School, better known as Sterling Aviation High School, in the Houston Independent School District. This year's program was documented through video.
The Houston Aviation Club has about 20 students and a dozen mentors who meet monthly during the school year to participate in learning, enrichment and mentoring activities.
- October 2017: The Aviation Club had the unique opportunity to watch the Wings Over Houston practice and listen to pilots from Thunderbirds and Texas Legends tell us their stories of success.
- November 2017: Ellington Airport’s (EFD) team showed students around and introduced them to HAS’ future Spaceport.
- December 2017: HOU gave the students a 4-Star airport tour.
- January 2018: Space Center Houston gave students a great learning experience when retired U.S. Air Force officer and former NASA astronaut Jerry Ross stopped by for a quick photo op and they were invited to join his Q&A session.
- February 2018: Texas Southern University opened their doors up for the Houston Aviation Club to work on their projects and gave students a tour of the university.
- March 2018: The Houston Aviation Club visited the Lone Star Flight Museum Aviation Learning center and toured the facilities.
At the beginning of the school year students were assigned team projects to build and market an airport terminal space that caters to “Generation Z,” ages 21 and under. The Houston Airport System (HAS) asked employees to vote for their favorite marketing team and build team. That’s TWO votes. Employees voted for the marketing team with the best pitch and the build team with the best terminal space design. Projects were displayed in front of William P. Hobby Airport's Management Office and on HAS’ intranet, called CONNECT.
