“Houston is a welcoming city, embracing all cultures, ethnicities and nationalities. We are a world-class international city, striving towards an ever more global future.” —Sylvester Turner, Mayor of the City of Houston.
Houston Airports are a direct reflection of the city’s appreciation for diversity. Over 25% of Houston’s residents are foreign born. More than 100 languages are spoken in Houston, and 92 countries have consular offices here.
Houston Airports’ Protocol Office team—led by Director of International Relations Željka Momirović — is trained in protocol for efficient diplomatic engagement and facilitates the arrivals and departures of official guests through the airports.
“We facilitate the arrivals and departures of hundreds of high-level guests on an annual basis, and we work hard to ensure our guests leave with a great lasting impression,” said Momirović.
Most recently, the Protocol Officer coordinated the arrival process for the Team Rubicon Norge, a nonprofit that unites the skills and experiences of military veterans around the globe with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams.. A group of eight members from Norway arrived in Houston to provide disaster relief to those affected by Hurricane Harvey. The Houston Airports protocol team escorted Morten Paulsen, Consul General of Norway, to meet Team Rubicon Norge at the airport.
While no day is the same and last-minute request are the norm, the Houston Airports Protocol Office consistently ensures that every foreign dignitary has a welcoming and first class airport experience.
