Breaking barriers: Houston Airports welcomes Kelly Woodward as first female COO
March 18, 2024

Houston Airports has appointed Kelly Woodward as the Chief Operating Officer (COO). Woodward brings over two decades of aviation management experience, making her the first-ever female COO for Houston Airports.

Beginning Monday, March 18, Woodward will be responsible for executing the strategic initiatives of Houston Airports, ensuring a 5-Star system performance at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU), enhancing efficiency within divisions, collaborating with airport stakeholders and maintaining operational excellence throughout the organization, which includes Ellington Airport (EFD) and the Houston Spaceport.

Most recently, Woodward served as a Managing Director with AvAirPros in Houston, overseeing operational readiness, terminal systems integration, move sequence teams, and baggage handling systems teams for the IAH Terminal B Transformation.

She previously worked for Houston Airports from 2002 to 2023. During that time, Woodward worked in various leadership roles, such as Operations, Contract Services, Custodial Services, Interim General Manager of Bush Airport and most recently as the Assistant Director of the Operational Readiness Division.

"Kelly Woodward's wealth of experience and leadership skills make her the perfect fit for the role of Chief Operating Officer. We are excited to have her back on the Houston Airports team. I have full confidence in her ability to drive our strategic initiatives forward,” said Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports.

The aviation industry has historically been male-dominated, and Woodward's appointment as the first female COO at Houston Airports highlights the industry's progress toward gender diversity. Industry data indicates that women remain a minority in aviation leadership roles. Woodward's success serves as an example for aspiring women in the field.

Woodward holds a Master of Science Degree and a Bachelor of Science Degree, both in Aeronautical Science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. She also possesses an FAA Commercial Pilot/Flight Instructor Certificate and is a Certified Member (CM) of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).

Houston Airport System encourages the community and aviation enthusiasts to support Woodward in her new role as COO. Her appointment is a significant milestone for Houston Airports and represents progress in the industry's commitment to diversity and inclusion. As we work towards becoming a 5-Star global air service gateway, Woodward's leadership will play a crucial role in maintaining operational excellence.

"Diversity is the heartbeat of innovation. It is an honor to work alongside a talented team where our collective strengths propel Houston Airports to new heights,” said Kelly Woodward, Chief Operating Officer for Houston Airports. “I’m excited, humbled and honored to return to Houston Airports under the leadership of Director Szczesniak. Together, our priority is ensuring our airports provide a clean, safe and intuitive guest experience. From world-class amenities to mitigating traffic, my focus as COO is delivering a functional and efficient experience from curb to gate.”

Beyond her professional achievements, Woodward is a wife and mother of three. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
