A new round of artists and a new gallery showcasing work created by past participants highlight the success of the only active airport artist-in-residence program in the United States.
Houston Airports is proud to showcase the dynamic talents of its current Artists In Residence (AIR), who are contributing to the thriving art scene across Houston and within George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). With a successful track record of nurturing creativity since its inception in September 2022, the award-winning Houston Airports art program has reached a milestone that allows for establishing a Gallery featuring the work of previous program participants inside IAH Terminal A.
Meet Miller Quevedo - Artist In Residence at IAH
Miller Quevedo, a talented Colombian artist, is currently gracing the IAH Terminal A Connector Gallery as the Artist In Residence from January to March 2024. Quevedo's work transcends traditional boundaries, combining painting, sculpture and music to create interactive masterpieces. Airport guests can engage with Quevedo's art by strumming the strings on his pieces or adding their own words of compassion to his work.
Quevedo passionately describes his vision for the Artist In Residence program, "I will design, create, and exhibit different types of interactive paintings and sculptures that can be seen, touched, and heard. I aim to ensure that all people can use some of their senses, whether absent or mechanically neglected."
This immersive experience offers passengers a unique opportunity to be part of the creative process, fostering a connection between the artist and the diverse airport audience.
Quevedo will be at Bush Airport from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Meet Suzette Schutze - Artist In Residence at HOU
Adding to the artistic tapestry of Houston Airports, Suzette Schutze is the latest addition to the Artist In Residence program at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). A multidisciplinary artist, Schutze explores the intricate beauty of nature through her paintings, drawings, and sculptures, showcasing abstracted gestural expressions that capture the essence of complex organic structures.
Schutze's work is a testament to the diversity within the AIR program, bringing nature-inspired creations to HOU. Passengers and visitors can anticipate encountering her visually captivating and thought-provoking pieces during residency.
Schutze will be at Hobby Airport from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Inauguration of the Artist In Residence Gallery
Thanks to the program's success and the generous contributions of artists like Quevedo and Schutze, Houston Airports is excited to announce the Artist In Residence Gallery inside IAH Terminal A. This gallery will house a curated selection of art on loan from participants, allowing passengers to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of creativity cultivated within the program.
"Visitors are encouraged to explore the gallery, interact with artists and discover the unique stories behind each creation," said Alton DuLaney, Curator of Public Art for Houston Airports.
