Cargo agents, freight forwarders and logistics managers can enjoy the benefits of one of the world's finest air cargo facilities at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The airport has become one of the busiest international cargo gateways, and the cargo facility has the capacity to handle perishables, oilfield equipment, computers, auto parts and other vital shipments safely and efficiently.

A continuing $3.1 billion renovation of facilities through the Houston Airport System (HAS) includes a new $180 million air cargo distribution center. Improved runways, taxiways and ground access provide stronger links in the chain that will result in quicker movement of pallets and crates, with each individual item being vitally important to someone HAS serves.

Besides moving the freight, state-of-the-art document handling systems streamline the shipping process and provide real-time tracking.

With recent cargo facility improvements, IAH has 880,000 square feet of cargo area, increasing its capacity by 75 percent. With the new cargo area, improved ramps and taxiways, and the new Terminal E that opens in January 2005, IAH will have 120 acres of improvements.

Air Caro Excellence Award

Honored in 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008, the Houston Airport System is a four time recipient of the Air Cargo Excellence Award.

In addition to the greater surface capacity the new cargo facility provides, the improvements also increased the capacity to more than 454,000 tons. The area also includes a 500,000-square-foot warehouse, and ramp capacity for as many as 20 widebody aircraft.

The distance between the airside doors and the landside truck doors is 175 feet. An interior loading and unloading area spans 125 feet by 870 feet and is column-free for easy movement, access and versatility.

"The northeast cargo facility was crucial to continuing the expansion of cargo activity at IAH," said HAS director Rick Vacar. "The development of the entire 165-acre cargo complex and the unique public/private partnership between HAS, AMB Property and Tramell Crow Co. has tripled the airport's cargo capacity."

"This high-throughput facility reflects the realities of today's freight storage, where speed and not storage is most important for shippers and customers," said John Meyer, vice president of the airport development team for AMB Property Corp., a San Francisco-based real estate investment trust that owns the Air Cargo Center. "Houston is a major international import/export gateway to Latin America, Mexico, Asia and Europe for
high-value, time-sensitive products that cannot afford to sit in a warehouse."

"We see tremendous growth potential here. We are an absolute natural destination and cargo hub from Mexico, Central America and South America. Now we definitely have the capacity to handle whatever the folks in those markets bring our way."

The building handles large volumes of domestic and international freight, small expedited parcels and U.S. mail, and has the flexibility for customization.

"Our team achieved reduced operational costs for the airport, airlines and freight forwarders with superior design and engineering for exceptional efficiency," said Steven Bradford of Trammell Crow's airport facilities development division.

The air cargo revenue stream represents a significant percentage of the total properties revenues at IAH. In the City of Houston's FY 2003 budget, anticipating revenue from the cargo facility before the improvements, cargo rental fees were projected at $1.3 million. The FY '04 budget, taking the increased capacity into account, set cargo rental fees at $2 million.

Growing demand for air cargo services in Houston and Southeast Texas drove the development of the $125 million air cargo complex.

Services & Amenities

Our special consideration for customer convenience makes shipping through the Bush Intercontinental Airport Air Cargo Distribution Center a hassle free experience. Cargo carriers experience little or no wait at IAH. Advanced computer technology helps U.S. Customs clear cargo while the cargo is still in the air, reducing red tape, speeding up shipment delivery and ultimately, saving shippers money. For cargo shippers who have not already precleared their cargo before arrival, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and U.S. Customs teams are available to inspect freight.

Also located on the airport is a full service animal/plant inspection facility. IAH is one of the few airports in the U.S. certified to clear propagative plant materials and seeds from foreign countries. Furthermore, new technologies to better identify insects and plant diseases will be available at this airport soon.

Other advantages of the Bush Intercontinental Airport Air Cargo Distribution Center include: the airport's access to U.S. foreign trade zones, allowing duty-free storage; manufacturing and processing of imported goods; ample, reasonably priced warehouse and office space available at the airport; hydrant fueling; a 24-hour, seven day a week postal center; and a livestock export facility.
