HAS Hay Program

In 2006 Houston Airports (HAS) introduced the Hay Program at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Ellington Airport (EFD). With nearly 3,000 acres of land being used for the program, HAS offers competitive prices. Today big round bales and neatly stacked squares of hay can be seen from the roads at both IAH and EFD.

Most of the hay at IAH is a Common Bermuda often used to feed cattle. A higher grade of hay fed mainly to horses - called Tifton 85 is also being harvested in smaller quantities.

Tifton 85 is a hybrid Bermuda grass selected for improved nutrient value, high dry matter yield, and increased drought tolerance. Though it is no more cold tolerant, Tifton 85 has a higher level of digestibility - 60 percent better than coastal. With the combination of nutrition and digestibility, it is worth every penny.

Houston Airports also produce quality Bahia. Protein content of Bahia ranges from 3 to 8 percent in hay depending on time of production and management. Quality Bahia provides a sustainable food source for livestock and a good supplemental source of roughage.

The Houston area naturally produces a great annual Ryegrass that provides forage in late autumn and winter. Look for these bales to help meet your needs during the scarce winter and early spring months.
