Steady international air traffic growth continues for HAS

One month shy of being halfway through 2008 the Houston Airport System (HAS) is continuing its upward climb in international air cargo and passenger traffic. Through the first five months of this year Houston’s three primary airports have served a record 21.5 million travelers, or roughly 4.3 million passengers per month.

Considering the less than ideal circumstances of the current U.S. economy, Houston’s considerable positive growth is a testament to its strong business and economic climate.

International passenger traffic and air cargo shipments continued registering the most significant increases through this time period. Total international air cargo traffic increased by a dramatic 11.2 percent during the month of May 2008, while year-to-date total international passenger traffic, through the same month, increased by 7.5 percent.

William P. Hobby Airport registered a significant year-over-year increase of 7 percent through the month of May 2008, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2007.

The international regions with the most significant passenger traffic increases through the month of May 2008 were Europe, with a year-over-year increase of 13.5 percent; Central and South America combined, with a 9.5 percent increase; Mexico, with a 5.4 percent increase, and Canada, with an increase of 3.2 percent.

Among the top performing cargo airlines for the month were TACA, with a 64 percent year-over-year increase and Air France with a 24.5 percent increase.

The international regions with the most significant growth in air cargo traffic during the month of May 2008 were Mexico, Central and South America combined and Europe, with respective year-over-year increases of 94 percent, 16 percent and 12 percent, all in comparison to the same timeframe in 2007.
