On Tuesday, May 20, 2008, the Houston Airport System (HAS) will honor Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by hosting a Business Opportunities Workshop. Hosted in part by Houston Councilmember M. J. Khan, this free business networking event will be open to the public and is specifically targeted to the local Asian Pacific American business community. The workshop is designed to educate small and minority-owned businesses about contract opportunities, mandatory certification, the application process and procedures. In effect, business owners are provided a thorough course in how to do business with Houston’s airports.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport, William P. Hobby Airport and Ellington Field comprise the Houston Airport System and together they support over 151,000 local jobs – not to mention the more than $24 billion in positive economic impact that they contribute to the local economy.

Taking into account that HAS is the fourth-largest airport system in the United States and the sixth-largest in the world, airport authorities confirm there are a wealth of opportunities at the airports.

“Frequent business opportunities arise at the Houston Airport System,” says Rick Vacar, director of the Houston Airport System. “Workshops like these allow more minority companies a chance to become familiar with the playing field and eventually become more successful.”

For those interested in doing business with HAS, Vacar encourages them to attend this Business Opportunities Workshop, which is scheduled to take place at the International Trade Center in Southwest Houston from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

“Volume is not the key when applying for a contract,” adds Vacar, “Don’t flood the system with extra paperwork; merely highlight your strengths for the project in question, and make sure to provide enough proof that your company is right for the job.”
