Halfway through the year, traffic at Houston’s airports is up by 2 million more passengers than in 2005.

Fueled by increases in passenger travel through Houston, carriers at the city’s two primary airports see dramatic growth in cargo and passenger traffic. Both George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports have registered considerable growth in passenger travel through the month of June 2006.

Overall, through the month of June, more than 25 million passengers have traveled through the Houston Airport System year-to-date, that’s roughly 2 million more travelers than in 2005 – or a year-to-date increase of 7.2 percent, year-over-year.

Freight poundage at Houston’s airports has also increased. Through the month of June, total international air freight poundage for the airport system increased by 10.9 percent year-over-year. Domestic air freight has increased by 4.6 percent for the year so far, in comparison to the same timeframe last year.

Among the carriers with the most significant increases in passenger traffic during the month of June were Aeromexico, Air France and British Airways with respective year-over-year increases of 131.11 percent, 76.58 percent, 9.6 percent.

Continental Airlines’ flights to Europe and Continental Express’ domestic flights registered respective year-over-year increases of 40 percent and 20.7 percent for the month.

Top performing cargo carriers for the month included Pakistan International Airlines, Air France, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Cargolux, Southwest Airlines and World Airways. Each with respective year-over-year increases of 146.94 percent, 73.58 percent, 53.10 percent, 38.43 percent, 25.7 percent and 24.08 percent.
