Houston Airport System August 11, 2006

Anyone can develop cancer, and that’s a frightening thought for many people; but next month the Houston Airport System is clearing the runway and leading the race in an effort to help fight this disease, which is expected to attack almost one point four million people this year alone.
Preparations are underway for the sixth annual Runway Race for Life, with this year’s event benefiting the American Cancer Society.
The charity fundraiser celebrates health and fitness in the face of an often crippling disorder which is expected to claim almost six hundred thousand lives this year. It is an illness that affects almost everyone in some way, according to the American Cancer Society’s Regional Vice President, Betti Guzman. |

“Nearly everyone we meet has a personal story about cancer,” says Guzman. “Either they are a survivor themselves, or they have been touched when a family member or close personal friend was diagnosed with the disease.
That’s why the American Cancer Society invests so heavily in research, education, advocacy and direct patient services. Our goal is to eliminate the disease as a major health problem, and we are very grateful to the employees of the Houston Airport System and to Jim McInvale for joining us in our efforts,” she added.
Community participation and involvement are priorities for the Houston Airport System, according to Director Richard Vacar.
“The Runway Race for Life is a proud achievement for us, people can see the human face of the airport," he said. "They’re gratified to know that this organization cares not only about their safety when flying but about the health and welfare of the community as well.”
This is a remarkable time to be involved in the fight, because new statistics about the disease reflect that for the first time on record, the number of cancer related deaths have decreased, thanks in large part to research funded by the American Cancer Society.
George Bush Intercontinental Airport proves a great venue and platform to highlight these medical achievements, with more than 48-million travelers passing through the airport last year alone, IAH ranks as the 9th busiest airport in the country, a perfect place to spread the good news.
Houston business titan and philanthropist Jim MacInvale, owner of Gallery Furniture, is joining the team as the primary sponsor for the Five K run, walk or stroll. Start time is 7:00am Saturday, September 9, 2006, followed by music, food, door prizes awards and more.
This year a new, “Tree of Hope”, will be adorned with ribbons allowing participants to make personal donations. Those 18 years and older may register for the 2006 race. Teams are encouraged, families are welcome and child care will be available.
