Marketing and Air Service Development

Houston, the fourth-largest city in the United States, is home to over 23 Fortune 500 companies, 86 foreign consular offices, and 3,500 international firms. The city is renowned around the globe as the 'energy capital of the world.' In addition, Houston has a diverse international population of over five million residents from 100 different nationalities who speak more than 90 different languages.

International air service via Houston taps into strong ethnic, leisure, and corporate travel markets.

The Houston Airport System, comprised of Ellington Airport, William P. Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental airports (IAH) has experienced continued year-over-year increases in passenger travel.

In 2007, passenger traffic reached nearly 52 million, making the Houston Airport System the fourth-largest multi-airport system in the United States and the sixth-largest in the world. With one of the largest federal inspection services facilities in the United States, the airport can process up to 4,500 international passengers per hour. With all these advancements and even more forthcoming, IAH is primed for new international air service.

Houston currently offers access to nearly 70 international destinations and over 120 domestic destinations, providing strong worldwide connection capability. In 2005, IAH was named “Airport of the Year” by the FAA, and is one of two U.S. airports acting as a model airport for Customs & Border Protection.

Recent terminal expansions and improvements earned Hobby Airport the number one rank among small airports two years in a row by the J.D. Power and Associates traveler satisfaction survey. In the same study, Houston’s largest airport, Bush Intercontinental came in at the top-half of large US airports, at number eight, for overall customer satisfaction.

Houston-based Continental Airlines, IAH’s primary carrier, was rated the number one traditional network airline in the nation for customer satisfaction. Hobby newcomer, JetBlue Airways meanwhile was selected as the number one low-cost carrier airline in the country for customer satisfaction – Southwest Airlines, which also operates out of Hobby, came in at number three.
