International cargo and passenger traffic in Houston continues to soar.
The month of May brought impressive gains in passenger and cargo traffic for Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). The combined passenger traffic at both airports increased by 7.2 percent so far this year and freight tonnage has climbed by 5.4 percent.
In the first five months of 2006 almost 1.3 million passengers were added to the rolls of IAH travelers, an increase of 8.5 percent. Hobby’s passengers were up by 3.3 percent.
Houston’s international passenger traffic posted its usual impressive traffic growth. In particular passenger traffic to Central and South America increased by 24.2 percent over May 2005 and 17.4 percent for the first five months of 2006. For May, Air France posted a 49.63 percent growth in passenger traffic to Europe and Aeromexico soared to 58.08 percent over last year.
Air cargo traffic at HOU is up 37.1 percent over May 2005. Meanwhile at IAH strong May gains from Cargolux (up 38.34 percent), DHL Express (up 50.33 percent), United Parcel Service cargo to Mexico (up 45.88 percent), and others; these carriers were part of a total increase of 9.9 percent in overall cargo traffic at the airport.
