A direct link to India from Houston
An improved air service to India would help more than 68,000 people of Indian origin in Houston better link to their homeland. A 16-member team of the Greater Houston Partnership recently traveled to this South Asian country to make the case for direct air service between Houston and India. Read Story

Virgin Nigeria makes the case for US air service
VIRGIN Nigeria, that country’s fully private sector flag carrier, recently, was guest at two information sessions for Diaspora leaders to dialogue on the airline’s application to the U.S Department of Transportation for an aviation license to operate direct flights from Nigeria to continental USA. The sessions, which were held in New York and Houston, Texas, respectively, were organised by the US chapter of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO Americas Inc.) in co-operation with the All-Nigeria American Congress (ANAC). More daily nonstop flights for Hobby Airport
Fueled by the strength of Houston’s domestic air travel market, Southwest Airlines today announced the addition of three new daily nonstop flights from Houston’s Hobby Airport. On July 17, 2006, the carrier will inaugurate a new daily nonstop flight between Denver and Houston, with the intention to increase the frequency of this service to two daily flights on August 4th. Also in July, Southwest Airlines will add a third daily nonstop flight to Tampa Bay from Hobby. Read Story

Rolling out the red carpet

Already the only organization of its kind in the world to have been rated number one in customer for seven consecutive years, Wilson Air Center is looking to raise the bar on corporate aviation at Hobby Airport and in the process to become the number one fixed base operator in the nation. The brainchild of Kemmons Wilson, founder of the Holiday Inns chains, Wilson Air is turning the old Fletcher Aviation site at Hobby Airport into a state-of-the-art, full-service R&R facility for globe-trekking pilots, VIPs and celebrities. Another addition to airport security
In 17 seconds, 32 bursts of air can detect explosives particles as small as one-billionth of a gram and now the ‘puffer machines’ that deliver this service are in use at Bush Intercontinental Airport. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) identifies these Entry Scan explosives-detection devices as one of the latest tools in its arsenal of airport-security equipment and beginning this month two of these machines will be operated at Houston’s largest airport. An unexpected surprise for Hobby passengers
For most it was their first encounter with a live performance in an airport terminal. Many passengers were star-struck as country music superstar Phil Vassar made his way onto center stage at Hobby Airport’s Central Concourse last week. Fans stopped the chart-topping music star before he began his 30-minute performance for autographs and pictures inside Houston’s second-largest airport. Vassar was performing in celebration of Southwest Airline’s 35th birthday anniversary. Read Story

Accolades for the Airport Rangers
Five years ago, after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, a group of horseback-riding volunteers were put together by Houston Airport System’s director Rick Vacar. Their mission was simple: act as the airport system’s eyes and ears on the more than 11,000-acre-wide Bush Intercontinental Airport. This month, an army of over 750 horse-riding volunteers at IAH were honored for their contribution to airport security by the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) International. Partnering with the community
Continuing its commitment toward community involvement, the Houston Airport System recently participated in the Mayor’s Office Houston A+ Challenge teacher externship program. For one week in June, a Wheatley High School teacher spent her days with HAS personnel learning the ins and outs of Houston’s three primary airports. Read Story
