Airport Festival brings in scholarships for local students 
At the recent luncheon held in appreciation of Bush Intercontinental Airport 10 area students were awarded college scholarships

Aviation enthusiasts from all over the Houston area came out to celebrate the 24th Annual Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) Appreciation Festival on Saturday, May 6, 2006.

Each year, every purchased ticket to the festival and sales from the luncheon, bring in a chance for a local high school senior to get a college scholarship. The IAH Airport Appreciation Festival is held every year at IAH and is put together by area business owners and community leaders in support of Houston's largest airport.

This year, the event - which was put together by the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce, the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce and the North Houston Greenspoint Chamber of Commerce - raised enough money to present 10 area students each with a $1500 scholarship.

Theses students have shown exceptional determination in their classes, grades, leadership and extra curricular activities.

The Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce sends applications to seniors for submission based upon their interest in the aviation or travel industry and financial needs to Aldine, Cypress-Fairbanks, Humble, Klein and Spring Independent School Districts. Each year the chamber tries to increase the number of recipients by at least one.

Some of the scholarships awarded included the Barbara Olson Memorial Scholarship and Ernie Desoto Memorial Scholarship, both sponsored by the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce. One individual, Jay De Los Santos, contributed a scholarship out of his own pocket.
