ATA Airlines now flies nonstop, twice-daily to New York from Hobby Airport.

Fresh off a record-setting year that served some 48 million passengers and moved more than 347,000 metric tons of air cargo in 2005, the Houston Airport System (HAS) today celebrated the inauguration of ATA Airlines at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU).

As passengers from the 9:30am New York-to-Houston flight made their way off the 737 aircraft, they were greeted by a friendly crowd of Houstonians who were quick to offer a little taste of Texas hospitality.

Among those in the crowd were John Denison, president and CEO of ATA Airlines and Luis Perez, deputy director of HAS.

On behalf of Houston’s Mayor Bill White, Perez welcomed ATA to the city and proclaimed April 4th ATA Airlines day in Houston. HAS Director, Rick Vacar also celebrated the inauguration.

"We welcome ATA Airlines' new service to Houston," he said. "They add a new option for our Hobby Airport customers and increase Houston's presence in the global air transport network."

The twice-daily, nonstop flights from Houston to New York’s LaGuardia Airport is the only nonstop service between the two airports.

“The Houston market is one of strength and one that will expand ATA’s network to a part of the country that we did not previously serve,” Denison said.

Last year Hobby Airport – Houston’s second-largest and all-domestic airport – served more than 8.2 million passengers and was ranked the 40th busiest airport in the country for total passenger traffic.
