For Sunday’s long-awaited NBA All-star Game, more than 50,000 fans have already claimed their spot in the Houston scene.

The likes of Eva Longoria and Magic Johnson are among the star-studded crowd that is expected to generate in excess of $70 million for the Houston economy over the upcoming weekend.

Sunday’s game will be the latest sporting event to take place in the fourth-largest city in the United States. In February of 2004, the NFL’s Super Bowl took place in Houston. Baseball’s All-Star Game followed five months later. The Astros played into the postseason later that year, and again last autumn, including the state's first World Series games.

"I don't know of another city in North America that has done that in 24 months," said Jordy Tollett, president of the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, to the Houston Chronicle in a recent edition.

Easing the experience of getting to and from this bustling metropolis have been the two commercial airports of the Houston Airport System: George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby airports.

The Houston Airport System is the fourth-largest airport system in the United States and the sixth-largest in the world. Last year, the municipally owned airport system served 48 million passengers and moved more than 347,000 metric tons of air cargo shipments.

IAH is the 10th busiest airport in the country for total passengers and has also been recognized as the timeliest airport in the U.S.

“Our airports have the capability of connecting travelers to any corner of the world,” said Rick Vacar, director of the Houston Airport System. “The word about our connectivity and reliability is out and in the future we will surely see a host of other major events taking place in Houston as a result.”
