Double digit growth in international passenger and air cargo traffic Through the first 60 days of 2008 the Houston Airport System served an additional 8 million travelers, and experienced double digit growth in both international air cargo and passenger traffic. This according to the latest traffic report released, this week, for the month of February 2008, and in addition to the 52 million passengers served by the airport system last year.

Houston’s new hotspot is London Both British Airways and Continental Airlines celebrated on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, as the open skies agreement between the United States and the European Union took effect. British Airways opted for an intimate ribbon-cutting ceremony with the passengers of their first flight. Continental celebrated with passengers, employees and political figures such as Mayor Bill White, Congressman John Culberson, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee and others.

Singapore Airlines arrives in Houston To the beat of Russian Cossacks and Lion Dances the inaugural flight of Singapore Airlines arrived, last month, at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. Touting their largest business class seats in the aviation industry and their unrivaled network of Asian destinations, the international carrier becomes the first to connect Houston to Moscow, Russia and Singapore.

At Hobby Airport, expert riders will be able to take advantage of the TSA’s Black Diamond initiative Beginning on Monday, April 21, 2008, travelers passing through Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport will have the option of self-selecting the security lane at which they want to be screened. Airport authorities and the Transportation Security Administration have partnered up to bring the TSA’s ‘Black Diamond-Expert Rider’ Self-Select initiative to Houston’s oldest commercial airport.

Pilot Global Entry Program steers new and faster course for international travelers Beginning this summer, George Bush Intercontinental Airport will test an innovative program aimed at speeding up the immigration customs process for low-risk, frequent, international, “trusted” travelers entering the United States. Those who qualify for the pilot Global Entry Program are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who are frequent international travelers.

Houston’s airports implement ticket-less parking Self-service, please. Already an amenity at millions of retail chains across the country, the option of paying an automated machine is becoming ever more popular with American consumers. At George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports this service is also available in the form of INSTA Park. Instead of printing a parking ticket and paying an attendant at the gate, motorists at the airport can simply insert their credit card as they enter the public parking garages.

Blazin’ through life-saving efforts They are the first to respond to any type of emergency at the airports, from a passenger in distress to an actual aircraft disaster. The 148 members of the Houston Fire Department’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting teams at George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports ensure the continued safety of travelers through Houston.

Active and retired members of the US military honored at Ellington Field Lessening the burden of injured military personnel and their families was the mission of this past weekend’s first annual Salute to Veterans fundraiser event at Ellington Field. Dozens of area residents turned out to support the members of the US armed forces who have returned injured or wounded from their respective deployments.

Brady urges Congress to follow example set by aviation industry Citing the numerous business ties between the United States and Colombia made possible by Houston’s two primary airports, Congressman Kevin Brady, this month, made one final plea to Congress before heading to Colombia. What the legislator for the eighth congressional Texas district was asking for was the approval of a free trade agreement between the two countries.
