It Takes Two To Tango - Houston And Continental Airlines Awarded New Air Route To Buenos Aires

HOUSTON - The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has just issued a show cause order tentatively awarding Houston and Continental Airlines the seven U.S.-Argentina frequencies for which Continental and Delta had filed competing applications.

DOT in essence repeats the arguments in Houston's filings, including that "the major public benefits of selecting Continental in this proceeding include that it would be a new entrant in the U.S.-Argentina market; open a new gateway to Argentina; provide first nonstop service at Houston, a Continental hub; provide new one-stop single-plane service at New York/Newark; and provide a broad range of new service and competitive options throughout the U.S.-Argentina market."

“We are very happy to hear this news,” said Houston Mayor Bill White. “It will mean jobs -- both for those directly involved with the airlines, but also from the increased trade and business contacts this new air route will provide. It also further cements Houston's position as a major gateway to and from Latin America. That is something that should not be underestimated.”

This is the 73rd international destination for Houston and its 52nd destination in Latin America. Houston already serves as a major Latin America gateway and is the number two U.S. hub in number of nonstop departures to Latin America and number one in terms of nonstop departures to Mexico and Central America. International passenger traffic at Bush Intercontinental Airport reached 6.5 million passengers in 2004 and is growing at a double-digit rate this year.
