William P. Hobby Airport handles domestic passengers for eight commercial airlines and is the international point of entry for general aviation activity between Texas and Mexico. The airport plays a key role in Southwest Airlines' route system, and maintains two 7,600-foot runways, one 6,000- foot runway, and one 5,150-foot runway. Hobby's airfield is capable of handling all but the largest narrow-body aircraft in operation today (up to a Boeing Boeing 737-300,500,700). The terminal building consists of three concourses with a total of 22 aircraft gates. Hobby supports a major general aviation operation including five fixed based operators and several hundred corporate jets.
Southwest Airlines was responsible for more than 80 percent of the total enplanements at Hobby in 2005 and is operating an average of 10 flights per day per gate. Southwest Airlines plans to maintain Houston as one of its focus cities and is looking to serve new markets from Hobby. To accommodate these expansion plans, and to increase the passenger level of service at the airport, the Houston Airport System will continue its capital improvements program, which began in 2000, and will add four additional gates to the Central Concourse. That includes the relocation and expansion of the parallel taxiways immediately south of the terminal area, phased reconstruction of the concourses and portions of the terminal, and an upgrade of Runway 4-22.
