Another Asian carrier arrives at IAH With today’s inaugural flight, EVA Air Cargo becomes the third Asian carrier offering scheduled all-cargo service from George Bush Intercontinental Airport. As the Boeing 747-400 freighter aircraft made its way past the water arch setup by one of the Houston Airport System’s three aircraft rescue firefighting stations at Bush Intercontinental, the crowd at the IAH CargoCenter grew anxious with anticipation. Among those in attendance were Dennis Kao, chief executive vice president of EVA Air Cargo; Tracy McDaniel, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Greater Houston Partnership. The month of September 2007, brought another 4 million travelers to Houston With the end of the year just months away, the international regions with the most significant growth in passenger traffic, during the same month, were Central and South America combined; Canada; and Europe; with respective year-over-year increases of 11.4 percent, 7 percent, and 5.4 percent, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2006. For the year so far, through the month of September 2007, the top-performing passenger airlines included Lufthansa, Aeromexico, and China Airlines. Read Story
Continental Airlines announces new service to Heathrow Joining the likes of British Airways, Continental Airlines today announced it will launch twice-daily nonstop flights to Heathrow from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport beginning on March 29, 2008. Earlier this year, the United Kingdom’s largest airline had announced they would also begin operating out of London’s Heathrow Airport on March 30th of 2008. Both new services are the result of the recently approved open skies agreement between the United States and the European Union. Read Story
Preparing for Emirates While Emirates continues touting its much publicized new Houston service around the world, airport authorities at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) are pulling out all the stops to welcome the Dubai-based air carrier next month when it is scheduled to arrive for the first time at IAH. The airport’s Terminal D is undergoing a massive facelift that when completed will give the airline a royal welcome. Read Story
Business momentum, anticipation and light moments characterize this year’s State of the Airport address As the holiday travel season begins its build up to the year end crescendo, the refrain for the Houston Airport System is business is strong, planning and preparation are paying huge dividends and the future is looking very bright. Houston’s airports draw national media attention Houston’s airports are the talk of several national media publications wanting to know how both George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports managed to avoid some of the pitfalls of this summer’s intense travel season. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation, through the month of September 2007, Bush is rated the number one airport in the nation for on time performance. These recurring excellent marks continue even as IAH handles more passengers each year. Read Story
Stellar airport for dignitaries and space travelers Awaiting the arrival of eight very special guests, members of the media from across the nation gathered recently at Houston’s oldest joint-use civil/military airport. From the moment Air Force One first poked its nose into the airspace above Ellington Field all eyes and lenses were on the presidential aircraft. As the commander in chief made his way off the aircraft and onto the airfield the commotion among the crowd grew stronger – they were all competing for the same shot after all. Read Story
Friends and neighbors of Hobby invited to celebrate in the airport’s rich history Live music, lots of people, good food and even a couple of show-stopping attractions will be a part of the upcoming community celebration in honor of Houston’s oldest commercial airport. Hobby Fest has all the makings of a great festival – only it is an intimate party for friends and neighbors of the 80-year-old airport. The lineup for the community event won’t feature any major recording artists or flashy pyrotechnics, but it will offer a hefty slice of good old-fashioned American history. Read Story
Plane-spotters flocking to Houston’s airports In the 1970’s, they first gathered to share their mutual admiration for the airplane. Under the leadership of Paul Collins, the founder and self-appointed president of the World Airline Hobby Club, roughly 60 airline/aviation enthusiasts first gathered in Cincinnati to trade aircraft memorabilia and talk aviation. Since then the hobby of tracking aircraft by their tail numbers, taking pictures and video footage of them and sharing them with other aviation enthusiasts via the internet has grown into an international pastime that has enticed millions of participants. HAS raises more than $100,000 for the local SPCA Sneakers, wagging tails, the pitter patter of little feet, and the sound of barking filled the runways at Bush Intercontinental Airport, this past month, as the Mutt Strut and Runway Race 2007 brought hundreds of human and canine competitors to Houston’s largest airport. They were running and walking for a good cause – to raise money for the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Read Story
