Today, the Houston Airport System (HAS) unveiled a new and colorful exhibit at William P. Hobby Airport. Faces of Flight shows the photographic work of Ted Lee Eubanks, Jr., a Texas photographer. Featuring birds such as the Black-billed Cuckoo, Brown Thrasher, Hooded Warbler and the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, the display represents a partnership between HAS and the Houston Audubon Society.
“It’s not often that birds and airports compliment each other, though we do maintain a wetlands mitigation area to help preserve native birdlife,” says HAS Director Rick Vacar. “This exhibit also represents flight at its most basic and we can all appreciate the beauty in that.”
“The Houston Audubon Society is proud to be a Faces of Flight exhibit sponsor,” says Gina Donovan, executive director of the Houston Audubon Society, a 38-year old organization with a mission to promote the conservation and appreciation of birds and wildlife habitat. “We want Houston residents and visitors to appreciate the great diversity of birds found in the Houston area and to understand Houston’s unique location in the crossroads of several migratory flyways.”
Ted Lee Eubanks, Jr. is also a naturalist, experiential tourism consultant and lead author of, “Birds of Houston, Galveston, and the Upper Texas Coast.” The collection of 43 photographs is mounted on a unique foundation designed by Houston Airport System employees to resemble the wings of an aircraft.
The exhibit is part of HAS airport beautification efforts that enhance the traveler’s environment and highlight local arts and culture. HAS maintains a substantial permanent art collection and is also planning several temporary exhibits during the next year. Faces of Flight is the first such temporary exhibit.
