35 million passengers and counting
Four months until the New Year, the Houston Airport System closed the month of August 2007 with more than 35 million passengers already served. Year-to-date, this marks a year-over-year increase of 4.4 percent in total passenger traffic for Houston’s three primary airports.
Particularly strong were increases in international passenger traffic from George Bush Intercontinental Airport, which registered a considerable growth of 6.6 percent during the same month, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2006. Total air cargo shipments also increased by 7 percent during the month of August 2007.
Among the international regions with the most significant passenger traffic increases were Canada, Europe, and Central and South America combined; with respective year-over-year increases of 12 percent, 11.2 percent and 10 percent for the same month.
Accounting for this considerable growth were positive traffic numbers registered by air carriers like Lufthansa (+ 40 percent), China Airlines (+28 percent) and TACA (+21 percent) during the month of August 2007, in comparison to the same month in 2006.
Air cargo carriers Federal Express and Saudi Arabian Airlines also registered significant year-over-year increases of 40 percent and 31 percent for the same month.
The international regions with the most air cargo traffic growth during the month of August 2007 were Mexico; Asia, Africa and Australia combined; and Canada; with respective year-over-year increases of 105 percent, 67.3 percent and 66.2 percent.
