Energy giants to get closer A new service scheduled to takeoff in January of 2008 will offer a new level of connectivity between Aberdeen and the energy capital of the world: Houston, Texas. Air carrier City Star Executive announced, this week, that next year it will launch the first ever intercontinental business-only scheduled service between the two cities. The new nonstop service will operate using a Boeing 757 – 200ER VIP business jet aircraft, which will offer 50 first class cradle seats and a relaxing “home away from home” lounge area. Read Story

Watch the latest episode of Houston Airports Today We scoured the globe for some of the stories we’re bringing you this month as Houston Airports Today Runway Remix 2.0 takes off. We’ll check the scene in Dubai, globe trot with the Sister Cities of Houston organization and show off our fancy new airport cars. We’ll also take a look back at some of the most popular stories we’ve aired. It’s all available on the Municipal Channel every Wednesday at 7 a.m., at 1:00 p.m. (or after City Council) and 7 p.m.. Houston’s international air traffic continues to soar Houston’s international air traffic continues to rise thanks to a steady cargo and passenger traffic increases. According to the July 2007 figures, international air cargo traffic increased by 11 percent and international passenger traffic climbed 3 percent year-to-date, compared to 2006. Total air cargo traffic for the Houston Airport System increased by 10 percent, year-over-year, during the month of July 2007. Read Story
Global hot-spot: Houston From its humble beginnings, the Houston Airport System has evolved into one of the most important international gateways in the world – and the proof is in the numbers. The year was 1969. The country was in mourning for President Dwight D. Eisenhower; Neil Armstrong had made history by becoming the first man to set foot on the moon; controversy over the Vietnam War was flaring; the Woodstock Festival was in full swing; and Boeing had just introduced their revolutionary new aircraft: the 747 jumbo jet, which could transport in excess of 190 passengers. Even outside the airport business is booming Humble is a small 10 square mile city located right next door to Houston’s largest airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Established in the early 1800s, the city was more of a rural area until the airport first opened its doors in 1969, bringing with it a whole new market of consumers. Many of them were transient international travelers on their way to their next destination. Today, the city has a population of 15,000; more than a dozen hotel/motel establishments; close to 200 restaurants and eateries; several hundred shops and retail operations; and one of the largest sales tax bases in the local region. High-flying aerobatics in the sky Last time the Canadian Forces’ 431 air demonstration squadron known as the Snowbirds came into town, hurricanes Katrina and Rita stole much of their thunder. Houstonians were still recuperating from the mass exodus that preceded Hurricane Rita’s landfall in September of 2005 and many New Orleans residents were still adjusting to life in their new home away from home in Houston. This time around, the Snowbirds are prepping to tear over the skies above Ellington Field to take center stage at the 23rd annual Wings Over Houston Air Show. Read Story
Opportunity knocks twice On August 29th, HAS rolled out the red carpet to dozens of companies and businesses at the Humble Civic Center. The all day event allowed business owners to network with local companies and possibly walk away from the event with a contract at one of Houston’s airports. Among the many contracts that are available with HAS include supply, purchasing, planning, architecture, electrical, construction, retail, food and beverage opportunities. Read Story
Military personnel now feel more at home when passing through Hobby Airport A brand new state-of-the-art United Service Organizations facility is now open at William P. Hobby Airport. One that will make our country’s soldiers feel more comfortable when traveling through Houston. Due to recent construction at Houston’s second largest airport and the need to accommodate a growing number of military personnel, a decision was made to relocate the USO, and make it bigger and better. Dogs and their owners are invited out to race at IAH Expect to see boots on the ground along with sneakers, flip flops and paws at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on October 20th, all participating in our annual runway race with the airplanes. The event has been re-named this year to the Mutt Strut & Runway Race, benefiting the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Family entertainment, food, prizes, free child care and parking are all included in the $25 admission fee. Read Story
Star Wars invades Hobby Airport Passengers at Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport received an out of this world surprise as members of the Star Wars universe crowded Central Concourse. Well known characters such as Darth Vader, R2D2, Boba Fett, Storm Troopers, Clone Troopers, an Imperial Guardsman and R6D1 leisurely strolled the concourse as dozens of passengers gathered around to snap photos of them. The Star Wars gang was there awaiting a certain flight; a flight that was carrying a very important piece of movie history - Luke Skywalker’s Jedi lightsaber. Read Story
Soul searching on the greens In a small, secluded room inside Terminal C at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, some people seek respite from the cacophony of sounds and sights of the busy airport. Some come for silent meditation, others for inspiration; still others sit in one of the pews searching for the strength to face the adversity or tragedy that has made their travel necessary. It all takes place in a 30 by 30 square foot room called the Interfaith Chapel. Read Story
