Many know it as the “silver city with the golden sands,” but to most it is simply the energy capital of Europe. Aberdeen is a Scottish city with a lot of heart that in the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries was known for its grey granite that sparkled like silver along its sandy coastline.

Today, that flicker is stronger than ever as the city has become the primary hub for Europe’s energy industry. It is also a key destination for industry insiders across the globe.

In fact, a new service scheduled to takeoff in January of 2008 will offer a new level of connectivity between Aberdeen and the energy capital of the world: Houston, Texas. Air carrier City Star Executive announced, this week, that next year it will launch the first ever intercontinental business-only scheduled service between the two cities.

Atli Arnason, chief executive officer of City Star Airlines, which operates City Star Executive, says the new service is in response to traveler demands.

“There has been a growing demand from North East-based business markets to revolutionize the concept of business class travel with the introduction of a direct link connecting two hugely important economic regions - Aberdeen, Europe’s Oil & Gas Capital, and Houston, the United States’ Oil & Gas Capital,” he notes. “We will meet that demand with a service running four times a week between the two airports.”

The new nonstop service will operate using a Boeing 757 – 200ER VIP business jet aircraft, which will offer 50 first class cradle seats and a relaxing “home away from home” lounge area. Arnason says customer satisfaction will be key to the four scheduled weekly flights.

“City Star Executive aims to offer a simply luxurious service, a simple onboard service with specially selected menus of exquisite cuisine and carefully selected wines, a simple fare structure, a simple connection between the two cities without the need to change aircraft in London or Amsterdam, with a focus on flexibility and convenience and customer preferences - all this from your local airport,“ he offers.

Energy boost. City Star Executive's new Aberdeen-Houston service is scheduled for takeoff in early 2008 and promises to boost the global energy industry for all markets.

In Houston, the news was met with much anticipation. Richard M. Vacar, director of the Houston Airport System, called the new service, which will operate from Aberdeen Airport, a necessary addition.

“The United Kingdom has long been one of our strongest economic partners and this new service is certainly going to fortify that relationship even more,” Vacar says. “We are talking about two of the most important energy markets in the world. The demand is there, and now so is the access.”

Industry insiders applauded the new service.

“The (Aberdeen and Grampian) Chamber (of Commerce) has been working closely with the business community… to better understand the need for a direct service between the two oil capitals,” says Geoff Runcie, chief executive of the chamber. “Our recent joint survey highlighted again the demand and service requirements. We are absolutely delighted that City Star Executive has taken this bold step to the meet the very specific needs of our key primary industry sector. We are sure that the business community will value this direct service and support it to save precious travel time and to increase their productive time in both Aberdeen and Houston.”

City Star Executive joins 17 other foreign-flag carriers already offering access to more than 70 direct and nonstop international destinations from George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Last year, total trade between the United Kingdom and Houston was valued at more than $1.7 billion.
