Supplier Diversity Champion Award
The Houston Airport System received the Supplier Diversity Champion Award at the 2014 Top 25 Prime Contractors, Architects & Engineers for Diversity & Supplier Diversity Champion Awards hosted by the d-mars.com Business Journal on July 30, 2014. Jason McLemore, HAS/OBO Director and Rhonda Arnold, Community Relations Director, accepted the award on behalf of HAS. This award is given to companies and agencies that foster business growth in minority communities by supporting small business diversity initiatives. Awardees included: Business, government, and educational institutions that have shown diligence in getting subs and primes together to help reach minority goals will be honored with the Supplier Diversity Champion Award.
Asian Chamber of Commerce
Director Mario C. Diaz, Ambassador Suk-bum Park and Michael Kim of Korean Air, were panelists at the Asian Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon that was held at the HESS club in July. Director Diaz presented on the Houston Airport’s vision for globalization. On May 2, Korean Airlines began nonstop daily flights between Seoul, South Korea and Houston. Linda Toyota, president of the chamber is pleased with the partnership between Korean Air and air passengers in Houston. As Director Diaz previously stated “Korean Air gains access to one of the most dynamic economies and fastest growing populations in the world, while passengers in Houston find themselves with direct access to both Seoul and other key destinations located throughout Southeast Asia.” The Asian demographic has expanded by 70 percent, a growth rate that tops the levels found in traditional Asian hubs such as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle. The Houston Airport System welcomes the opportunity to be of service to the Asian Community. Also present: Key Stakeholders and Business Leaders in the Asian Community, Katena Carvajales, HAS Public Relations Manager and Rhonda Arnold, Community Relations Director.
Concessions Industry Day
The Houston Airport System recently held a Concessions Industry Day at the Houston Airport Marriott at George Bush Intercontinental. The program covered the procurement process, ACDBE opportunities, and also discussed the different packages with concepts, locations and other important details. There was also a tour of Bush International Airport. Justina Mann, Chief Procurement Officer, Randy Goodman, Director of Concessions and Jason McLemore, Director of HAS/Office of Business Opportunity presented a dynamic overview of the process and possible opportunities in the area. Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders from all over the United States were in attendance.
Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce – Government Affairs Division
Perry Miller, General Manager of William P. Hobby Airport addressed the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce regarding the progress of the international terminal construction at Hobby. This was a lively group of business leaders, key stakeholders and staff of elected officials. Miller also addressed that the Wright Amendment will not affect our future international travel at Hobby Airport. President of the chamber, Cindy Harreld and Lisa Holbrook, Government Affairs Division Director, 2013-2014 expressed that the attendees walked away with a better appreciation for the outstanding airport system we have in the greater Houston area. Ms. Arnold also gave overview of the volunteer ambassador outreach. Also present: Genji Leggett, Hobby Airport and Rhonda Arnold, Community Relations Director.
Greater Houston Business Procurement Forum
HAS executives were panelists at the Greater Houston Business Procurement Forum which was held at the Houston Community College Southwest. Jarrett Simmons, Director of Planning gave an overview of current status and future growth plans for HAS. Justina Mann, Chief Procurement Officer gave a review and outline of the inner workings of the Supply Chain Management and Procurement Department of HAS and opportunities for MBEs, DBEs in construction, as well as professional services and supplies. Jason McLemore, HAS Director of OBO gave an overview of how to do business with HAS. Mr. McLemore emphasized the importance of becoming a MBE, DBE, Buy Houston First, certifications and opportunities for those groups in the aforementioned areas. HAS Supply Chain Management and Procurement professionals were on hand for the match making session that followed the forum.
OBAP Houston ACE Academy 2014 at Bush Intercontinental Airport
Perry Miller, General Manager of Hobby Airport, Jarrett Simmons, Director of Planning and Rhonda Arnold, Community Relations Director participated in the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) Houston Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy on Saturday July 12, 2014. There were 22 high school students in the camp this year. These students learned about the theory of flight, took various tours including Air Traffic Control Tower, Chelsea Food Service Facility, United Airlines Flight Attendant Training Center, Airport Operations, & Pilot Training Center. They heard from over 20 speakers about their careers within and beyond the aviation industry. Xavier Samuels and Kelvin Sherman both pilots with United, thanked the Houston Airport System and other participants. HAS received an award for our efforts and they indicated that the students will never forget this experience. Other participants included: Riggs & Assoc. Bailey Military Institute, Airline Crew-Taxes, HEB, On-Site Partners, Marriott Hotels and United Airlines.
National Black Coalition for Federal Aviation Employees Aviation Career Education Camp at Hobby Airport
Ross Underhill, Assistant General Manager of Hobby Airport, Rhonda Arnold, Community Relations Director and Hobby Operations presented to the NBCFAE Aviation Career Education Camp group at Hobby Airport on July 29, 2014. The NBCFAE/ACE Camp consisted of 15 students, five chaperons, and the Regional NBCFAE President. Dana Williams of the FAA has been working with students who are interested in careers in aviation for the past 20 years. Also in attendance, was Mr. Kenneth E. Morris, Founder/Chief Executive Officer of Universal Elite Aerospace.
