The Houston Airports Rangers not only participate in security rides at IAH but also special events like the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Parade.
Ten years ago, the Houston Airport System (HAS) created a first-of-its-kind airport equestrian volunteer program to add an extra layer of security along the perimeter of George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

On Saturday, March 22, volunteers, airport officials and the local community celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the Houston Airports Ranger Program during a fun-filled day of games, food, live music and trail rides.

“Our top priority is the safety and security of our passengers, and the Airport Rangers Program offers a unique opportunity for the local community to take an active role in the security of the airport while enjoying their passion for horseback riding,” said HAS Chief External Affairs Officer Saba Abashawl. “The program was a success from its inception and has become respected nationally. As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the program, we welcome more Houstonians to grab the reins and become a Houston Airports Ranger.”

The Airport Rangers Program was created in order to establish an additional layer of security along the outer perimeter of the 12,000 acre airport. The mounted security patrol can reach wooded areas that are not easily accessible by car, bike or foot.

Volunteers include elected officials, executives from the Houston business region, off-duty law enforcement officers, community leaders and local residents.

Each participant undergoes a security screening process, participates in a training program and agrees to carry a cell phone to report any suspicious findings to the airport’s operations team. The Airport Rangers have alerted airport operations to a variety of suspicious activities that required immediate action from abandoned vehicles and illegal dumping to signs of illegal camping and hunting.

The Airport Rangers also represent the Houston Airport System on a regular basis at events such as the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Parade, Aeros & Autos and many others. For more information about the Houston Airport Rangers Program visit fly2houston.com/AirportRangers.
