The U.S. Coast Guard will soon post their Houston-Galveston Sector Headquarters in this facility at Ellington Airport.
The United States Coast Guard is making plans to finalize the establishment of Ellington Airport as the new home for its Houston-Galveston headquarters facility.

Construction on a new 117,000 square-foot facility is almost complete and as a result, Coast Guard officials say they expect to begin moving operations and 300 employees into the new location by the mid-part of January 2014.

The headquarters facility is being relocated from the Houston Ship Channel. The new HQ at Ellington Airport will house the Sector’s command center, investigative services, electronic support, public affairs and the regional civil rights office.

“We’re thrilled to see the Coast Guard presence expand here at Ellington Airport,” says Ellington General Manager Brian Rinehart. “We’ve enjoyed a strong partnership with them in the past and this new facility will present opportunities for an even stronger relationship moving forward.”

The arrival of Coast Guard staff will come almost one year to the day after the project’s groundbreaking ceremony. On January 31, more than a hundred people gathered together at the headquarter’s site to celebrate the launch of construction with a turn of 10 ceremonial shovels.

Since that time, Coast Guard officials have been counting down the days until they could move into their new home.

“Anyone who has visited our current base at the ship channel could see that we’ve outgrown our current facilities,” said Sector Commander Captain James Whitehead at the groundbreaking ceremony. "This building will be a huge improvement for the way we do business, support commerce, ensuring security and serving the people of this great country.”

Ellington Airport supports the operations of Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air Guard, the Joint Reserve Center, NASA and the 75th Reserve Division. Ellington Airport also serves general aviation and is a reliever airport.
