2013 Airport Minority Advisory Council’s Airport Business Diversity Conference in San Diego, CA
Houston Aviation Director Mario C. Diaz inspired the leaders in aviation as well other Aviation Directors during the 2013 Airport Minority Advisory Council’s Airport Business Diversity Conference which was held in San Diego, CA.
Diaz spoke on the importance of encouraging others to become leaders in the aviation profession. His words were aligned with the mission of the organization which includes the inclusion of minorities and women in employment and contracting opportunities throughout the aviation industry.
Rhonda Arnold, Director of Community Relations, was moderator for a panel that included aviation marketing professionals. Others present: John D. Clark III –J Clark Aviation Group; Marshall Taggart – Tallahassee, FL; Deborah Ale-Flint - Oakland; Bryant L. Francis, C.M. – Shreveport, LA; Mario Rodriguez – Long Beach; Jeffrey Hamiel- Minneapolis- St. Paul; Linda Valdez Thompson- Dallas/FortWorth.
2013 Texas Black Expo 10th Annual Conference
The Texas Black Expo is in its 10th year of strengthening businesses, inspiring youth and building better lives. As a community partner, executives from the Houston Airport System (HAS) attended the corporate breakfast which focused on the theme “Diversity through Technology”.
Councilmembers Jerry Davis and Larry Green were also in attendance among other business leaders and members of the corporate community. Others Present from HAS: Justina Mann, Jarrett Simmons, Darian Ward, Chandrika Vanner and Anthony Shipp.
Recently, Community Relations in collaboration with Planning Design & Construction and Ellington Airport addressed two area Chambers of Commerce.
Jarrett Simmons, Assistant Director of Planning and Development, addressed the West I-10 Chamber of Commerce. The Business and Economic Development Committee was given an overview of the current planning and development of new air service, the scheduled improvements to airport facilities, and other news updates.
Additionally, Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce received a dynamic presentation from Brian Rinehart, General Manager of Ellington Airport. Rinehart addressed an audience of more than 100 Chamber members and provided information regarding upcoming projects at HAS, particularly those that will affect the chamber members in relation to the William P. Hobby Airport and Ellington Airport expansions.
Cindy Harrell, the President of this Chamber works closely with HAS and welcomes the exchange of this pertinent information.
Educating the Community
Rhonda Arnold, Director of Community Relations often expresses the importance of collaborating with area institutions of higher learning and the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with our youths.
This year’s outreach will provide area students the opportunity to meet one-on-one with aviation professionals.
Aldine Independent School District – Career Days
Dunn Elementary: James Dean HAS Planning, Design & Construction - Project Manager, enlightened the minds of our youth recently during a career day that was held at Dunn Elementary. HAS received a letter from the counselor of the school thanking HAS and Mr. Dean for valuing education and having a positive influence on tomorrow’s leaders.
Escamilla Intermediate School: Andre Garner, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) Superintendent, addressed students at their annual career day. Houston Airports has participated in the outreach for the past 3 years. Garner educated students on his responsibilities and encouraged students to remain in school to get an education.
Prairie View A& M University: Summer Transportation Institute. The program’s goal is to expose young minds to various aspects of transportation and transportation related careers and motivate them to consider transportation careers. Our HAS professionals, Mary McKnight, Josh Samic and others provided information and a tour of various facilities. Rhonda Arnold gave a presentation on the Careers in Aviation. These 20 students enthusiastically look forward to discovering these possible aviation career choices.
