Several people gathered at IAH to welcome home heroes on their way to a special wounded warriors weekend.

The Houston Airport System (HAS) is showing its support for members of the United States military, as Armed Forces Day once again focuses the nation’s collective attention on appreciating our heroes in uniform.

While Armed Forces Day isn’t officially recognized until Saturday, May 18, HAS crews working at both George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) are wasting no time in making sure the men and women who serve our country so proudly are receiving the appropriate praise and gratitude.

These efforts include offering vital support to both the Wounded Warrior Project at IAH and the USO meal initiative.

Wounded Warrior Project

The Wounded Warriors Heroes’ Welcome took place on May 17, 2013, inside the baggage claim area of Terminal C at IAH. Homemade signs, American flags and roars of applause were all part of the scenery as hundreds of wounded soldiers from all branches of the U.S. Military made their way on to buses for a fun-filled weekend in Port O’Connor, Texas.

Once there, the wounded service members take part in a busy schedule of events, including helicopter rides, a fishing expedition and live music.

More than 300 families showed up for the big welcome at IAH along with dozens of volunteers. Representatives from the Houston Police Department are also on hand to both add to the welcome and ensure a smooth departure once everyone is loaded on to the buses.

But before the departure can take place, heroes walk through a throng of supporters who have gathered inside the Terminal C facility at IAH to let them know just how much their service and their sacrifice is appreciated.

“It’s an amazing experience once the troops begin to arrive and the crowds start cheering,” said IAH general manager Carl Newman. “It lets the troops know how much they’re appreciated and it gives the people in the crowd a chance to voice how much admiration they have for those heroes in uniform. It’s a terrific event and we’re thrilled to play a supporting role.”

USO Feeds the Troops

Another exciting event taking place in support of the troops involves the USO facilities at both IAH and HOU.

USO personnel will be offering free food to military personnel passing through the USO offices on Saturday, May 18, 2013.

At IAH, the USO facility is located inside Terminal D, while at Hobby Airport it can be found in the Central Concourse below Gate 44.

The Houston Airport System would like to thank all of the volunteers who have given so freely of their time and a special thank you to all of the men and women in uniform who risk their lives in order to keep us safe and free.
