Community Relations Continue Outreach Efforts

The Houston Airport System (HAS) welcomes the opportunity to partner with our key stakeholders and community leaders. In March, through our strategic community partnerships, the community relations department shared lessons learned and worked with community partners to assess their needs and develop shared strategies for meeting those needs.

Lone Star College - Resources and Partnerships
Growth Session


The External Affairs team recently hosted the Lone Star College’s Leadership Academy on March 1, 2013. director of community relations, Rhonda Arnold, welcomed the group of 30 Fellows from various locations within Lone Star College system, as well as in the community.

Ms. Arnold expressed the importance of collaborating with area institutions of higher learning and the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with Lone Star College. customer relations manager, Mary McKnight secured a tour of the USDA that helped to educate the fellows on rules and regulations within the Houston Airport System.

Other community leaders present: Barbara Thomason, president Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce; Ray Laughter, vice chancellor of external affairs for Lone Star College; Cynthia Gilliam, vice chancellor of administration and finance for Lone Star College.

TSU and Embry Riddle Students – American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) Conference

Mario Diaz, Houston's director of aviation, welcomed students from Texas Southern University and Embry –Riddle Aeronautical University to participate in the AAAE Conference which was held in Houston on March 3-6, 2013.

Students were able to meet airport management professionals who volunteered as mentors. The Students also shadowed a mentor throughout the conference to build relationships and learn more regarding aviation management.

Women in Aviation

On March 14-16, 2013, Ms. Arnold attended the 24th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference which was held in Nashville Tennessee. The theme of the conference, “Setting the Stage of Your Success” provided information and guidelines to promote future aviation careers choices for women and our youths.

There were more than 3,000 women from all over the world in attendance from all facets of the aviation industry. Arnold met colleagues from Embry Riddle University as well as Nigeria and shared the HAS our international outreach. Others present: OBAP Chairman Albert Glenn, who is a captain (pilot) with FedEx Express; Tahirah Lamont Brown, who is the first African American Female Pilot with FedEx Express.
