Community Relations has been working closely with the civic clubs to garner support for our volunteer program.

Rhonda Arnold, director of community relations recently addressed a group of civic leaders at the Riverside Hospital in third ward area of Houston regarding the airport system and its volunteer program.

Congressional Black Caucus Leadership Forum 

Mario C. Diaz, aviation director for the City of Houston, was a panelist at the meeting and match minority vendor outreach session during the Congressional Black Caucus Leadership Forum, which was held in Washington D.C. on September 21, 2012, by invitation of Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee.

Dallas Evans, chief procurement officer for the Houston Airport System (HAS), also participated in this event and addressed procurement questions.

This event was well attended and brought awareness to all participants that HAS is ready for business and welcomes qualified participants.

Additionally, minority vendors and suppliers were given an opportunity to meet procurement officers, contract managers and small business specialists to learn firsthand what it takes to win in the public and private sector.

Aviation Minority Advisory Council Industry Day on Capitol Hill – September 18, 2012

The main purpose of Industry Day is to participate in and continue an open dialogue between AMAC members and law makers on important issues affecting the Airport Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program and the airport industry.

It is the best forum for AMAC members to voice opinions to people who can affect real change, and helps policymakers understand the challenges and opportunities of operating in the airport environment. Other issues were also addressed in the area of diversity and inclusiveness in the Airport Industry.

Director of the Office of Business Opportunity, Carlecia Wright and Director of Community Relations, Rhonda Arnold were in attendance, along with Executive Director of AMAC, Shelby Scales.

Small Business Economic Development Summit

The City of Houston Council District K office, in conjunction with the Kingdom Builders Center Entrepreneurial Learning Center hosted a Small Business Economic Development Summit, Friday, September 14, 2012 at The Kingdom Builders Center.

Community Relations partnered with the HAS Office of Business Opportunity at this economic development summit. Other community representatives included the City of Houston, HISD, HCC, and METRO. Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, Senior Pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church, was the featured keynote luncheon speaker.

There were approximately 500 attendees at this small business event. The Houston Airport System was acknowledged as an event sponsor to benefit economic development. The Houston Airport System’s Office of Business Opportunities also managed an exhibition booth and distributed information about its vast program and services.
