Spirit Airlines began flight operations in Houston on September 20, 2012 with a non-stop flight connecting George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

The ultra low cost carrier is now operating twice daily service between the two Texas destinations, and has already announced plans to add two more destinations in early October.

The inaugural flight landed in Houston amid a great deal of fanfare. The Airbus A319 aicraft made its way through a water arch salute, as outbound passengers celebrated the airline’s arrival inside the gate holding area in Terminal A.

The ultra low cost carrier will launch two additional non-stop flights on October 4, 2012, offering service between IAH to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and McCarran International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas.

“Houston’s economy thrives because of strong trade and tourism to our city,” said Houston Mayor Annise Parker. “Bush Intercontinental celebrates Spirit’s new non-stop service to Dallas/Fort Worth as it offers low-fare flights between two strong business centers. The commitment of Spirit to broaden its service to Chicago and Las Vegas is welcomed.”

Spirit Airlines empowers customers to save money on air travel by offering ultra low base fares with a range of optional services for a fee, allowing customers the freedom to choose only the extras they value.

This innovative approach grows the traveling market and stimulates new economic activity while creating new jobs. Spirit's modern fleet, configuration and other innovations enable Spirit to burn less fuel per seat than competitors, making Spirit one of the most environmentally-friendly U.S. carriers.

“We know that Houstonians have been hungry for low fares and we are thrilled to be here to satisfy that need,” said Texas native and Spirit’s chief marketing officer Barry Biffle. “We are committed to saving our customers money on travel by offering them the lowest fares, and we look forward to giving our new customers from Houston the opportunity to take advantage of the ultra low fares that the rest of our growing customer base has come to know and love.”
