Volunteers make an invaluable contribution in creating a welcoming atmosphere at the airport.
If you’re looking for a unique and exciting volunteer opportunity, consider the Ambassador Program with Houston Airports.

Volunteers are needed to assist passengers in a variety of ways at both George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport.

“These airports represent a vital gateway to our city,” says Mary McKnight, customer relations manager with Houston Airports. “They often represent the first and last impressions people have of Houston so it’s important that we create a warm atmosphere.”

Volunteers with Houston Airports go a long way in creating that warm atmosphere. Stationed at various high-traffic areas across the airport facilities, the volunteers are an invaluable resource in answering questions from the traveling public.

Some of the volunteers are stationed at an information booth, while others make themselves available to passengers by simply walking through the terminals.

“The number one requirement is simply a desire to help,” says McKnight. “We’re not looking for people to do any sort of manual labor or heavy lifting. We just need volunteers who are willing to learn about the airport operation and then pass that knowledge on to the passengers, along with a smile.”

Interested applicants are asked to submit to a 10-year criminal background check, since access to secured areas is an essential part of the program.

Those volunteers who meet the initial requirements are given a free uniform and training from Houston Airports staff. In return, volunteers agree to work a minimum of four hours each week.

“Many of our volunteers wind up working more than the required four hours,” McKnight says. “They enjoy the opportunity to meet new people and they genuinely like being around the energy that comes along with an airport atmosphere.”

McKnight says her goal is to double the size of the existing volunteer program.
