Employees with the Houston Airport System spent much of their December trying to ensure that Houston area children would enjoy the 2011 holiday season.

Toy drives were launched at both William P. Hobby Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and hundreds of gifts were collected as a result.

Houston Airport System Cares About Kids

The Houston Airport System organized a holiday toy drive to benefit children in the Adine Greenspoint area.  More than 120 gifts were presented to Bonding Against Adversity, Inc. on December 19.

Two items donated by area children represented the perfect example of the holiday spirit of generosity. Matthew Buccieri and Leland Black had each won brand new bicycles through an academic competition which took place in their particular schools.

But rather than keep the bikes for themselves, both young men quietly brought them into the HAS administrative office and placed them next to the holiday tree for donation.

Alene Dixon, the boys’ grandmother, is an employee with the Houston Airport System and she says she couldn’t be more proud of her two grandsons.

“I was already beaming with pride because they had done so well in an academic competition,” Dixon says. “But the fact that they were willing to part with those bicycles to help someone less fortunate literally brought me to tears.”

Hobby Airport Employees Help Area Center

Employees with the Facilities Maintenance Division led the charge at Hobby Airport, collecting toys and other gift items for the Harbach-Ripley Neighborhood Center.

Located near Hobby Airport, the center offers a variety of programs to both children and adults, ranging from areas such as health and fitness to computer training.

After-school programs, Summer day camps and English as a second language (ESL) classes are also available thanks to the center’s efforts.

Employees at Hobby Airport say they specifically chose a program located near the airport to benefit from the holiday gift drive.

The employees at Hobby Airport collected dozens of toys and other gift items throughout the month of December and delivered them to the center on December 19.
