Every year, Industry Day on Capitol Hill brings out aviation leaders from across the country for a whirlwind of meetings, briefings and forums in Washington, D.C.

This year, Houston Airport System’s (HAS) Rhonda C. Arnold, director of community relations and Goodwille Pierre, of the Office of Business Opportunities, supported HAS’ commitment to staying on top of issues which affect Houston’s business and aviation communities.

Along with members of the Airport Minority Advisory Council, Arnold and Pierre were able to get an overview of current issues such as the FAA Reauthorization Bill and were able to visit Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Senator John Thorne and Senator Roger Wicker to advocate Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) and Airport Concessions DBE Programs.

9th Annual Public Policy Conference – with Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee

Houston Airports was also represented during the 9th Public Policy Conference hosted by Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee. Mrs. Arnold attended this conference as part of the global leadership within the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The civic and legislative agenda for the “Time is Now” event provided open dialogue and advocacy for global leaders.

2011 Annual Legislative Conference

More networking ensued with The Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference. The highlight was a dinner with the President of the United States and the First Lady. Mrs. Arnold took full advantage of the opportunity to build legislative relationships and share vital information with politicians.

More than 70 forums and panels ran over the course of the four day conference, which included topics on closing the achievement and opportunity gaps in education, assuring quality health care for every American, employment and economic security, ensuring justice for all, retirement security for all Americans, increasing welfare funds and increasing equity in foreign policy.
