We are literally letting the dogs out for one of the most unique fund-raising events in the country on Saturday, March 6, 2010 when the Houston Airport System (HAS) in partnership with the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HSPCA) hosts the Mutt Strut & Runway Race. The event, now in its third year, includes a 5K competitive race and a non-competitive run, walk or roll with participants invited to bring their dogs to the active tarmac of George Bush Intercontinental Airport, the eighth busiest airport in the country.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the HSPCA, which cares for more than 100,000 thousand needy and abused animals each year.

“The Houston Airport System is helping us make miracles come true everyday with their kind and generous support of the annual Mutt Strut and Runway Race. This one-of-a-kind event helps give Houston’s homeless, abused and neglected animals a second chance at life and we are proud of our partnership with The Houston Airport System,” says Patricia Mercer, Executive Director of the Houston SPCA.

The Mutt Strut & Runway Race has become extremely popular with people all over the Houston metropolitan area, “We are very proud of the fact that people are supporting a great cause but are also involved and interested in the development of this airport, which is a vital asset,” says Eric Potts, interim director of the Houston Airport System.

The event is drawing major support from the business community with dozens of sympathetic companies and entrepreneurs donating money and services. Last year’s Mutt Strut & Runway Race generated record breaking contributions in excess of $330,000 and attracted more than 1,900 people with 1,500 dogs.

The behind the scenes logistics is challenging and intriguing says Lenore Herman, coordinator of the Combined Municipal Campaign (CMC) the umbrella for all charitable efforts by City of Houston employees.

“We have to bring on operations, public safety, our physical plant maintenance our airfield and grounds, it is an entire airport operation and the most important thing is safety,” says Herman. "It’s also important to remember, we have to ensure the safety not only of the people but also the animals and we still have a complete operation going on, with airplanes taking off and landing.”

There are several must see showcase events such as the best dressed dog, and the pet verses owner look alike contests, along with live music, food, prizes, and awards. A number of pet-friendly services will be available including a low cost microchip clinic for dogs.

The Mutt Strut & Runway Race will be held at 4411 Wright Road Houston, Texas 7703. The gate opens at 6:00 a.m. rain or shine and the event concludes at noon. Race activities begin between 8:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Premium parking is available but limited; however shuttle bus service is available for remote parking.
