Air travelers impacted by Houston’s first big winter storm appreciated the new functions to learn about travel in and out of Houston’s three airports as the icy conditions swept across Southeast Texas.

“The level of web traffic was high during a critical time for air travelers and our new functions on fly2houston.com allowed the public to find out in real-time capabilities what was happening so they could resume their travel plans,” says Roxanne Butler, Director of Public Relations and Communications. “We noticed that not only do these new web capabilities draw more visitors to our new Web site—it also gives them a reason to return since we are posting fresh content.”

The Houston Airport System launched the new Web site on January 16. The most popular days since it launched were Feb. 3 and Feb. 4 during a winter storm that brought ice to Houston’s three airports.

"The demand for timely and accurate information is very important to our passengers and during a weather crisis, fly2houston.com delivers what passengers what and need," adds Butler.

The most popular item on fly2houston.com is the new Flight Search tool – both commercial airports offer this measure to assist the traveling public and during irregular operations, the amount of traffic that utilized the tool was in the tens of thousands. Feb. 4, the flight search results gained 35 percent of all web traffic or 29,913 hits.

Fly2houston.com reports web traffic that was well above average with 76,000 page views on Friday, Feb. 4; and 63,000 page views on Feb. 3. In the history of fly2houston.com – the record for the most page hits was Sept. 11, 2008 as Hurricane Ike was in the Gulf of Mexico and fly2houston.com recorded 109,716 page views.

During the storm, the “Important Notices” section on the Homepage attracted 10 percent of the web hits. The external affairs staff worked all throught the day and night providing frequent updates as new information became available on fly2houston.com and on Twitter.

Another popular feature – Homepage links to the Houston Airports social media campaigns. The links on the Homepage have generated more traffic to Houston Airport System YouTube videos.

Recent postings in February gained new records for views with the new video promoting the Dreamliner flight to Houston gaining 3,713 views at press time and the Winter Storm video gaining 1,602 views at press time.
