Aspen, Colorado offers guests magnificent views and ideal conditions for skiing.

United Airlines has announced plans to begin non-stop flights from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to Aspen, Colorado, beginning on January 4, 2011.

The new service will connect Houston to one of the country’s premiere resort locations, with daily flights offering a 9:18 a.m. departure time from Terminal C.

The return flight from Colorado has a scheduled arrival time of 6:05 p.m. Tickets for the new Houston-Aspen flight go on sale September 7. United officials say the new service will remain in place until April 2, 2011.

Route planners for United Airlines seem to have placed significant focus on the Aspen market recently, as they’ve launched new service between the Colorado city and Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and now Houston.

Tom O’Toole, chief marketing officer for United Airlines spoke at an Aspen luncheon on September 2, telling the crowd, “Adding air service – more service, more places – is the tangible, practical evidence of the commitment of United Airlines to Aspen.”

For leaders with the Houston Airport System (HAS), the announcement represents the latest good news regarding the potential impact of a possible merger between United and Star Alliance partner Continental Airlines.

“We’ve recently seen an expansion in service from both United and Continental Airlines,” says Ian Wadsworth, chief commercial officer for HAS. “That’s one of the reasons why we remain optimistic about the proposed merger and the positive impacts it could have on the Houston market.”

The two airlines are hoping to have a merger deal finalized and in place by October 1, 2010. The United service between Houston and Aspen will be operated by SkyWest Airlines and will feature CRJ-700 aircraft.
