The Houston delegation made stops in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang in pursuit of new flights.

Direct flights from Vietnam to Houston are the hot topic and discussions are underway to bring that idea to fruition.

Mario C. Diaz, director of aviation for the city of Houston, led a delegation in October on a visit to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang for several high level meetings.

This trip comes on the heels of a personal meeting last month in New York between Diaz, Nguyen Minh Triet, president of Vietnam and Mr. Pham Ngoc Minh, president and chief executive officer of Vietnam Airlines.

They focused on the need for air service betweeen Houston and Vietnam, and how best the Houston Airport System (HAS) can help foster a direct flight.

With some 80,000 Vietnamese calling Houston home, research shows there is a robust market of passengers available.

Add to that an estimated market of 50,000 annual roundtrip passengers available in Ho Chi Minh City alone, and the synergies and business opportunities are immense for the airport system, the city of Houston, and the region.

“Air service to Vietnam will benefit the growth of Houston and Vietnam economically and further position the Houston Airport System as a global gateway. A direct flight will also contribute to the international vibrancy of our city when it comes to tourism, investment, and cultural exchanges,” says Diaz.

During the meetings he outlined five areas where Houston provides outstanding value to Vietnam as a long-term partner by offering its renowned expertise in the fields of energy, aerospace, technology, medicine, and education.

The Houston Airport System is in a unique position to offer more than just a passenger market because for decades the airport system has been hosting and perfecting relationships with developing airports all over the globe.

Via the Houston Airport System International Outreach Initiatives Program, airports from three continents have paid to send representatives to be trained and mentored by city of Houston aviation employees.

In addition the airport system has sent representatives to dozens of international airports to provide technical support and counsel.
