Six months into the New Year and still soaring
Halfway through 2007, the Houston Airport System has already served 26 million passengers. A good many of those travelers were en route to international destinations, according to the latest traffic figures for the month of June. Also in high-demand were cargo flights to global regions such as Asia, Africa and Australia combined, and Canada.
Total international air cargo traffic increased by 13 percent during the month of June 2007, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2007 – while international passenger traffic crept up another 5 percent, year-over-year, for the same month.
Particularly strong in June 2007 were air cargo shipments to and from Asia, Africa and Australia combined, with a dramatic 93 percent, year-over-year, increase; and to and from Canada, with a year-over-year increase of 33 percent.
Fueling these significant increases were foreign-flag carriers like China Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines and TACA International Airlines, which all registered respective year-over-year increases of 118 percent, 50 percent and 29.4 percent, for the month. China Airlines is among a host of new Asian all-cargo carriers that are now operating, or are looking to operate, out of George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).
Top-performing passenger airlines, meanwhile, for this peak summer month included Lufthansa, China Airlines, Aeromexico and Aviacsa, with respective year-over-year increases of 42 percent, 23 percent, 13 percent and 11 percent.
Overall, travelers at Houston’s airports, during the month of June, were headed to regions such as Central and South America, Europe and Canada in higher numbers than in the previous year. These region’s recorded respective increases of 10.3 percent, 5 percent and 4 percent for the same month, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2006.
