Houston’s international air traffic growing steadily

International carriers flying into Houston are experiencing significant increases in passenger and air cargo traffic. More than 21 million domestic and international passengers have already traveled through Houston’s airports in the first five months of this year. Most impressive, however, is the growth in transcontinental air traffic to and from the city.

During the month of May, international passenger traffic registered a significant, year-over-year, increase of 5.5 percent, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2006. International air cargo meanwhile, ended the same month with an 8 percent increase in total freight poundage.

Particularly strong in May 2007 were air cargo shipments to and from Asia, Africa and Australia combined, with a 75.3 percent, year-over-year increase; Canada, with a year-over-year increase of 70.3 percent; and Central and South America, with an increase of 8 percent.

These dramatic increases surface just as new Asian all-cargo carriers China Airlines and Korean Air Cargo get into the swing of things at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Top cargo-moving airlines for the month include Saudi Arabian Airlines (with a + 100 percent increase, year-over-year); Northwest Airlines (+ 25 percent); and Cargolux (+15 percent).

Some of the top-performing passenger airlines for the month include Lufthansa and China Airlines, with respective year-over-year increases of 38 percent and 26 percent – while top-performing international regions include Canada (with a + 16 percent year-over-year increase); Central and South America (+ 10 percent); and Europe (+6 percent).
