Healthy increases for international passenger and air cargo carriers at the Houston Airport System

International air carriers serving the Houston Airport System reported healthy increases in passenger and air cargo traffic for the month of April 2007. Particularly strong in April was air cargo to Asia, Africa and Australia combined, with a registered, year-over-year, increase of 118 percent.

More than 16.5 million passengers have already been served by the airport system in the first four months of 2007.

This just as several carriers have announced increased and new services to George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Emirates will begin new service to the United Arab Emirates in December of this year; Aeromexico will launch new service to both Ixtapa and Guadalajara this summer; Korean Air Cargo has increased their service to three weekly flights; and both Jade Cargo and AirBridge Cargo are slated to begin new cargo services to Shenzhen and Russia, respectively, by year’s end.

Year-to-date, total aircraft operations at Ellington Field also continue to increase. Through the month of April, year-over-year, aircraft operations at Ellington have increased by 23 percent. This significant increase is the result of considerable growth in the general aviation market, which so far has registered a year-to-date increase of 34.4 percent in aircraft operations.

Among passenger airlines, the top-performing carriers for the month of April include Lufthansa (with a year-over-year increase of 37 percent); TACA (+ 35 percent); AeroMexico (+ 31 percent); and Air France (+ 25 percent).

Top performing cargo-carrying airlines, for the same month, include Saudi Arabian Airlines (with a year-over-year increase of 85 percent); China Airlines (+ 53 percent); and AeroMexico (+ 11 percent).
