China Airlines breaks new ground at IAH
With this new service the carrier becomes the first Asian airline offering scheduled passenger and cargo service to Houston. Shorter delivery times and increased revenues were on the minds of those in attendance at the celebratory luncheon put together by the Houston Airport System, yesterday, in honor of China Airlines’ new all-cargo service to Bush Intercontinental Airport. Houston’s “Air-Scapade” is Back at Ellington Field
Make plans to attend the 22nd Annual Commemorative Air Force Wings Over Houston Airshow this coming October 21-22, 2006 when the Air Force's Thunderbirds take over the skies at Ellington Field. Positive increases in passenger and air cargo traffic continue for Houston
For the month of August 2006, the airport system registered double-digit, year-over-year, growth of 11 percent in total air cargo traffic. This in addition to a 7.8 percent increase in international passenger traffic and a 47.8 percent surge in aircraft operations at Ellington Field, for the same month. Read Story

Malls moving into the airport

It’s no longer a matter of selling key chains and postcards. Business experts note that the traveling retail market at the nation’s busiest airports is now as lucrative as mall shopping. Airport retailing, however, requires a special dose of “smart marketing” that can keep up with the ever-evolving consumer market and with the flood of shifting federal air travel regulations. Hurricane hunters stop in at Ellington Field
People call them hurricane hunters, but for the members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration the adventure of tracking storms is simply a part of the job. With the help of their trusty aircraft, named after a famous Hollywood starlet, the crew regularly pierces through hurricanes in an effort to better understand them. Recently Ms. Piggy was spotted soaking up some sunshine on the tarmac of Ellington Field. Read Story

Each year, literally thousands of individuals from all walks of life and virtually every region of the planet make the journey into one of the most renowned medical centers in the world – the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Their purpose for coming: to obtain medical attention.

Chasing planes in the big city
Their passion is tracing aircraft across the globe. To do this, they’ve created a network of aviation enthusiasts all over the world whose primary function is to photograph and record the tail numbers of aircraft for communal usage. Pictures are posted online where any number of aircraft aficionados can trace the path of a certain aircraft from one destination to another. For these individuals, the rush of spotting a plane is so intense that it requires the attention of not just one individual, but that of an entire multitude. Read Story

Rapid response in emergency situations
Here is the scenario: a Boeing 737 is flying into William P. Hobby Airport with a broken wing tank. Although it is still fairly intact, the wings are still 10-15 feet off of the ground. Fuel is flowing and the column is on fire. In a situation like this, Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighters (ARFF) only have between 90 seconds to two minutes to start applying an extinguishing agent to the aircraft before it burns through. HAS was among the crowd at this year's Chocolate Bayou Festival
A sweet and satisfying scene was lived in Houston’s Sunnyside Park, this past weekend, when thousands of people gathered to enjoy the 2006 Chocolate Bayou Festival. Aside from the event's usual fun-loving spirit, this year, attendees also found a wealth of information about the Houston Airport System. HAS was one of the main attractions at this community based event that celebrates the history, heritage, art and culture of Houston’s historic Sunnyside neighborhood. Read Story

Sputnik helps save America’s agriculture
Next time you enter the baggage claim area of the international arrivals building at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) don’t be surprised to find a beagle named Sputnik sniffing through your luggage. This friendly canine is part of a four member canine team at IAH that helps the United States’ Customs and Border Protection inspect and prevent the entry of plant and animal diseases, as well as certain insects, into the nation’s food supply. Employees at HAS go the extra mile
At Houston’s Bush and Hobby airports it’s all about going the extra mile. Employees that work at the Houston Airport System are encouraged to go above and beyond the average standards of common courtesy to make sure travelers feel welcomed. The Houston Airport System wanted to develop a program that would promote and exude superior customer service while rewarding those who would embody that notion. Thus, two years ago, the Houston Friendly campaign was born. Read Story

Cell Phone Lots at IAH get consolidated
Bush Intercontinental Airport has a new innovation that will save you gas and time, plus cut down on stress, when you come to pick someone up when their flight arrives. At the Cell Phone Lot, located off of Will Clayton Parkway, you can wait - free - under the supervision of a security officer until your arriving party calls you on your mobile phone to tell you they have picked up their checked bags and are ready for you to pick them up at curbside.
