Positive increases in passenger and air cargo traffic continue for the Houston Airport System (HAS).

For the month of August 2006, the airport system registered double-digit, year-over-year, growth of 11 percent in total air cargo traffic. This in addition to a 7.8 percent increase in international passenger traffic and a 47.8 percent surge in aircraft operations at Ellington Field, for the same month.

Accounting for this considerable growth were increases in air cargo and passenger traffic to most of the international regions served by the Houston Airport System. For the month of August, freight poundage to Central and South America; Europe; and Asia, Africa and Australia increased by 74.8 percent, 15 percent and 9.2 percent, respectively.

International passenger traffic to Central and South America; Mexico; Asia, Africa and Australia, and Europe, meanwhile, increased by 15 percent; 7.4 percent; 6.7 percent; and 3.2 percent during the same month, respectively.

Top performing passenger airlines for the month included Air France, Aero México and Continental Airlines (service to Central and South America) with increases of 57.52 percent, 54.22 percent and 15.5 percent, respectively.

Top performing cargo carriers during the same month included Air France, China Airlines, British Airways and Pakistan International Airlines respectively increasing by 70.77 percent, 56.15 percent, 23.78 percent and 19.35 percent.
