Houston’s international market share increasing

Both international passenger and air cargo traffic continued to increase at the Houston Airport System through the month of July 2006. For the first seven months of the year, the airport system registered respective increases of 7.5 percent and 13.7 percent in international passenger traffic and air cargo movements, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2005.

Accounting for this significant growth were increases in passenger and cargo traffic to most international destinations served from Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). In July 2006, passenger traffic to Central and South America, Europe, Canada and Mexico increased by 18.9 percent, 6.6 percent, 5.1 percent and 4.2 percent, respectively, year-over-year.

During the same month, air cargo traffic to Central and South America, Asia/Africa/Australia, and Europe increased by 32.3 percent, 25.5 percent and 16.1 percent, respectively, year-over-year.

Some of the top-performing passenger airlines for the month included AeroMexico, Air France, Continental Airlines (service to Central and South America), and British Airways with respective year-over-year increases of 100 percent, 70.6 percent, 20.3 percent and 8.6 percent.

Top-performing cargo carriers for the same month included AeroMexico, Air France, Pakistan International Airlines, and Saudi Arabian Airlines with respective year-over-year increases of 249.5 percent, 110.5 percent, 87.7 percent and 59.8 percent.

In April 2006, Pakistan International Airlines changed aircraft from an all-passenger 777 to a combi-747. Also, in August of this year, Saudi Arabian Airlines Cargo doubled their weekly service to two frequencies per week.
