Reception and exhibition honors Hobby Airport local student art contest winners
May 9, 2007

As of today, dozens of area students will share their works of art with millions of spectators at William P. Hobby Airport. Hobby is displaying the top paintings and drawings chosen from the Hobby Airport 80th Anniversary Art Contest, which is part of the yearlong celebration in honor of the Airport’s birthday.

The contest showcases talented local student artists and highlights the contributions and connections made by Hobby Airport with the surrounding communities and the Houston metropolitan area over the last eight decades.

“We are honored to provide a great venue to showcase the talent of these young artists,” said Mary Case, Hobby Airport manager. “Their vision shows us the positive impact of Hobby and aviation in all of our lives.”

Houston area art students, kindergarten through 12th grade, submitted hundreds of entries for consideration in this unique art competition. A panel of seven judges selected the first, second and third place winners from each grade level. Today the creators of the 37 works of art selected received awards at an airport reception. The winning works of art adorn the new Central Concourse at Hobby Airport through the end of the year.

Built in 1927, Hobby Airport was Houston’s first commercial airport. Today it serves over 8.5 million travelers a year. Photographs of the first place art works and a complete list of the art contest winners are available at www.fly2houston.com
