In the midst of travel horror stories from the northeast, a new study ranks Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport the No. 1 hub in the country.
New York based web site Daily Beast looked at a number of factors. Bush ranked near the top or at the top of all of them.
Before the sun set on Houston Monday, Megan Timms wanted to be reunited with her aunt and uncle in Houston. For two days she'd be stranded by snow in Washington, D.C..
"People were pushing and shoving and getting angry with each other," said Timms.
Houston, on the other hand, is known for its on time arrivals and departures, which helped land the big airport the top spot on the Daily Beast's latest survey of 27 hubs.
"You don't have congested air space. You don't have a lot of bad weather, so you're able to make your connection more assured," said Roxanne Bulter, Director of Public Affairs and Communications for the Houston Airport System.
The study found 90 percent of holiday departures are on time, and the average wait at security is just six minutes. Bush also ranked near the top of airport safety and amenities.
"Clearly convenience is the utmost importance for us and the ability to get in and around," said Jeff Sheldon, a traveler.
The airport is one of the few hubs that's actually growing despite a tough economy. A $1.2 billion expansion is taking shape to make travel more efficient.
Butler said, "It helps us attract other airlines because it looks at, 'If we want to grow, where do we go?'"
Airport leaders hope there's a ripple effect. Travelers who have a good experience at Bush will want to continue visiting Houston or even move here. Visitors from the northeast have nothing but good things to say about Houston after leaving a nightmare behind. Another recent survey by Axe grooming products ranked Houston's Bush Airport 20th. The company looked at airports that made meeting that special someone easier.
